Human rights

“Puisqu’ils ont osé, j’oserai aussi, moi”

Emile Zola

International human rights treaties, such as the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (ECHR), provide the legal basis for the rights of every individual worldwide. Unfortunately, the fact that each individual has these rights, does not mean that governments do not infringe upon them.

Our lawyers conduct legal proceedings in various areas of law before international tribunals and organizations, such as the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), the Treaty Monitoring Bodies of the United Nations, the African Commission on Human Rights and the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture.

These procedures usually involve cases against states about unlawful detention, torture, (political) murder and disappearances. Prakken d'Oliveira has represented clients in cases brought against the the Netherlands, but also Eritrea, Mozambique, Belarus and Libya, including the case of the Palestinian doctor who was unjustly detained in Libya for 8 years together with Bulgarian nurses .

Prakken d'Oliveira can also assist you in less high-profile but equally significant human rights violations, such as the violation of the right to property, or the right to a fair trial in (civil) procedures.
