International human rights

“Puisqu’ils ont osé, j’oserai aussi, moi”

Emile Zola

International human rights treaties, such as the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (ECHR), provide the legal foundations for the rights of every individual. Unfortunately, this does not mean that these rights are also automatically implemented and protected by governments and other such entities.

This practice group connects Böhler’s lawyers with experts in international, criminal and immigration law. We file complaints and conduct legal proceedings in numerous international tribunals and organisations, including the European Court of Human Rights, the United Nations Human Rights Committee, the African Commission on Human Rights and the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture.

These legal proceedings usually involve cases against states regarding issues such as unjust detention, torture, murder (including political murder) and disappearances. Böhler has represented clients in cases brought against the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and against the states of Eritrea, Mozambique, Belarus and Libya. The latter includes the case of the Palestinian doctor and Bulgarian nurses who were wrongfully accused and endured eight years of imprisonment in Libya.
