- Studied law and public administration at the University of Groningen (1989), and obtained a Juris Doctor diploma from the Loyola University School of Law in New Orleans, Louisiana (US).
- Between 1989 and 2001, worked as a researcher and later as a lawyer on death penalty cases.
- Admitted to the bar in Louisiana in 1997, and in Amsterdam in 2007.
- Awarded an honorary doctorate in law from Utrecht University in 2001, in recognition of his work in the US.
- Founder of the St Thomas Community Law Centre in New Orleans (US).
- Registered and practises as a lawyer in both the US and the Netherlands.

Between 2005 and 2008, Bart Stapert chaired the Dutch department of Amnesty International. He is the chairman of the Dutch foundation for legal aid to inmates on death row (in Dutch: Stichting Rechtshulp Terdoodveroordeelden) and acts as an adviser to Reprieve NL. He specialises in cases involving Dutch citizens who are imprisoned abroad, cases involving American law (including extradition cases), and complex criminal law and human rights cases (including those involving the death penalty).

Bart Stapert publishes and teaches on issues relating to human rights and American law. He will shortly be awarded a doctorate for comparative legal research into the right to defence counsel.
