Basebya appeal

< >

The Hague, 14 March 2013 - Yvonne Basebya has appealed the judgement of 1 March 2013 of the Regional Court of The Hague in which she was convicted of incitement to commit genocide.

The court failed to attach the requisite importance to the many exculpatory witness statements available. Furthermore, the court erred in applying certain important case law of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda regarding the period of time leading up to the genocide. Moreover, the court misapplied the legal concept of 'incitement to commit genocide'.

Read the the judgment here (only in Dutch).

Basebya is represented by defence counsel Victor Koppe, Tamara Buruma and Göran Sluiter.
